24 Hour Plays 2010 News and Press
On the evening of Monday, November 15th, 24 actors, six writers, six directors, one musical guest, and a production team showed an audience of Urban Arts friends and supporters at the American Airlines Theatre just what they had been up to for the last 22 hours.
The 2010 24 Hour Plays on Broadway Benefit, presented by Montblanc, raised $400,000 for the students of Urban Arts Partnership.
Charles Prophet, a senior at New Design High School and current Urban Arts student, took the three-word prompt “Why I Write” and opened the show with a lyrical and powerful poem that was both intensely personal and sweepingly relevant. And Elizabeth Cruz-Cortes, a recent graduate of Urban Arts, stayed up all night with five professional playwrights to write one of the plays performed at the American Airlines Theatre on Monday. Her play, “I Think You’ll Love This One,” cast Elijah Wood, Diane Neal, Gloria Estefan, and Alicia Witt as 10-year-olds and left us with a poignant statement about friendship.
This year’s generous talent list included: Actors Alicia Witt, America Ferrera, Anthony Mackie, Cheyenne Jackson, David Kremholtz, Diane Neal, Elijah Wood, Elizabeth Banks, Gaby Hoffman, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Stiles, Julie White, Kathy Najimy, Kyra Sedgewick, Lee Pace, Leslie Bibb, Michael Ealy, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mums (Craig Grant), Nia Vardalos, Rachel Dratch, Rosie Perez, Saffron Burrows, Sam Rockwell, Sarah Silverman, Tracie Thoms; Writers Theresa Rebeck, Elizabeth Cruz Cortes, Stephen Belber, Kristoffer Diaz, Lynn Nottage, Mike Doughty, and Rajiv Joseph; Directors Ari Edelson, Tony Goldwyn, Josie Rourke, Lucie Tiberghien, Lynn Meadow, and Thomas Kail; and Musical Guest M.
