

The Academy’s mission is to promote the intellectual, social and artistic development of underserved public school students by delivering cutting edge arts programs designed to develop student voice, strengthen academic performance and position graduates as agents of change in their communities.


MediaLab is an advanced media production program for high school students to become youth leaders and produce high quality film, animation and digital projects addressing social causes of their choosing. Students use the multi-media space to build artistic and technical skills, media literacy, and provide forums for sharing stories that bring awareness to relevant social issues.

The Master Poets is a collective of young poets, emcees and lyricists who are dedicated to using their voices to raise awareness about issues in their community and to advocate for change not only in their own lives but in the greater world beyond. Students will develop original work, perform their own writing in public, and participate in a service-learning component.

This collaboration with The New Group offers advanced theatre and playwriting training to our exceptionally talented high school students. The Life Stories program runs throughout the school year, and brings together students from a number of high schools to produce two original performances each year.

The Life Stories playwriting program is designed to guide the writer in finding honest and vivid strategies that articulate their personal and cultural impulses for writing plays. Students will be led through a series of movement and writing exercises that explore and develop their unique voice and write 15 minute one act plays.
