Building Confidence in the Classroom Through the Arts
As part of their Mandarin and English dual language program, students at I.S. 228 in Brooklyn are currently working on the first phase of the Story Studio program: an expressive self-portrait. The program, led by Mrs. Zhang and Teaching Artist Katherine Toukhy, has already shown great results!
According to Mrs. Zhang, Story Studio is positive and important for her students, particularly those who straddle the line between Chinese and American cultures. As she explains, in many of her student’s families, love is expressed through caring actions but not so much through words. Her students are taught to be modest and quiet.
Due to its focus on personalizing art, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, the Story Studio program has been instrumental in building confidence and expressiveness in Mrs. Zhang’s classroom.
