Mr. Bradley's class teaches Mr. Elliot's class how to write a song using four words
At PS 48Q we tried a combination of Master Class and I Teach I Learn. A few weeks ago, Master Artist Geo Wyeth came to visit. This week, students are taking what they learned and what they are experts in...and taught it to each other! Bradley Valentin's chorus class, Cristina Ambrose's theater class, and Elliot Montague's film class taught each other how to write a song, how to write a one-minute play, and how to create a character sketch. Great work guys!

PS 277's East Side House second graders are preparing for a trip to see Undertoe Dance Project perform at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center on March 4th, and they are super excited! Raoul, in the second class, predicts that "the dancers will be so good we are going to cry". That's pretty darn good! The students are excited to see the dancers perform many of the basic tap steps they themselves have learned, such as shuffle, falap, and cramp roll. They are excited to see dazzling new steps as well! Artistic Director, Dana Fisch, has helped the dancers prep by sending a list of themes of each piece of choreography - musical themes, rhythmic themes, and even emotional themes such as love, friendship, and collaboration. Here is a video of some of the students' predictions for the performance:

At PS 46 the tap and modern dance classes combined to make a Jabberwocky. Jabberwocky is played through a series of challenges where the group has to learn to work together as an ensemble (our word of the day). Once the ensemble passes the first challenge, the next step is to come together to make a Jabberwocky. And if they can do that, then the final challenge is to make their monster locomote!
We learned that a Jabberwocky is a made up monster from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, one of the stories about Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Since a Jabberwocky is a made up creature, we could use our imaginations, our bodies, and working together to make any kind of monster we wanted.
The pictures a little fuzzy because everyone was laughing a lot. It was really fun!

The students of IS 237's after school dance class in Flushing, Queens have been studying traditional West African Dance and the evolution of its western counterparts as a result of the Diaspora. The class has been exploring the connections of the past to the present through dance. They began with learning Doundounba, a traditional West African Dance of the old Mali Empire, where initially they followed along with traditional djembe rhythms, then moved to modern Hip Hop music.

Recently, they have been learning traditional movements from South America, Latin America and the Caribbean. Special guest conga drummers visited the class this week to give the students a different perspective on how our heartbeats make up our own natural percussion section. Students enjoyed performing to live drumming, and look forward to performing their piece in the school soon!
“It was really fun. We learned cool steps and learned all about congas. It was really exciting. We’ve been working on an African dance called Doundounba from the old Mali Empire. I like Ms. Farrah and the steps. Whenever I’m on stage I love to dance to the beat.” – Samriddhi, 6th grade
“It was really cool because I’ve never seen live drumming or experienced dancing to it. I was excited. I like getting to learn new dances. I never thought I would dance to African music and like it.” – Lizbeth, 6th grade
“The drummers played different types of beats on different drums. It made me feel awesome and free. It made me want to dance! My favorite thing about dance class is the rhythm of the beat we dance to and learning new steps. Dancing is awesome.” – Tiffanie, 6th grade
