PS 20 2nd grade students had visitors a few weeks ago- their Reading Buddies from New Design High School! Students from New Design came to PS 20 on a Monday and interviewed their 2nd grade reading buddies; they asked questions about family members, favorite foods, and hobbies. From there, 9th grade students and 2nd grade students choose two books from the school library- a book the 2nd graders could read and a book the 9th graders could read to their buddies. New Design students came back on Wednesday and the reading buddies shared an hour together in the library again. They read books, talked about the pictures, and had some laughs.
Later that week PS 20 students wrote their reading buddies thank you notes. Thank you very much to PS 20 administration, the teachers from PS 20 and New Design High School, and PS 20’s librarian! You helped make a great morning possible!

 

 

Everyone has been asking to see the completed Zombie Blues from PS 48Q's 2nd and 3rd graders. So without further ado, here it is! Congratulations to this class for a wonderful project.

 

PS 46 Makes a Jabberwocky

At PS 46 the tap and modern dance classes combined to make a Jabberwocky. Jabberwocky is played through a series of challenges where the group has to learn to work together as an ensemble (our word of the day). Once the ensemble passes the first challenge, the next step is to come together to make a Jabberwocky. And if they can do that, then the final challenge is to make their monster locomote!

We learned that a Jabberwocky is a made up monster from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, one of the stories about Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Since a Jabberwocky is a made up creature, we could use our imaginations, our bodies, and working together to make any kind of monster we wanted.

The pictures a little fuzzy because everyone was laughing a lot. It was really fun!

PS 48Q's Film Production

Here at PS48 in Jamaica Queens, 2nd through 5th graders are learning how to be young professional filmmakers! We have turned our classroom in a real film set, taken on various film crew roles, and learned all of the professional film set lingo. For our recent project, we have developed character puppets based on inanimate objects. Loosely defining inanimate object, we have created such puppets as "Porgina" (a puppet who is a mix of the color purple and orange), "Singing Subway", "Ninja Andriod", and "SpiderPig". Our final project will be a short puppet film that presents each character through a performed poem.

At the Heritage School next week, students in the Multimedia class will have a Master Class with David Weiner, the New York Editor for the Huffington Post.  Students in this class spent their first semester learning the basics of graphic design and journalism, including: conducting online research; taking digital photographs; writing and conducting interviews from a journalistic perspective; creating digital media using InDesign and uploading that media to blog sites. This semester, students are taking on various roles-- creating, designing and producing the school’s yearbook and on-line magazine. The focus will be on identifying and reporting on issues of importance to their community and peers; and how to use technology to enhance their own media literacy as well as make them more effective communicators.

In preparation of the Master Class, students have read a selection of articles David has written.  During the class, David will discuss these articles and how they affected change.  He will also discuss some tips for researching, interviewing and writing for on-line media sources, as well as ways to engage readers around an issue.

The Huffington Post launched in 2005 as an American news website and aggregated blog, featuring various news sources and columnists. The site offers progressive coverage of politics, media, business, entertainment, living, style, the green movement, world news, and comedy, and is a top destination for news, blogs, and original content.
