Arts Week at MS 131

This week is Arts Week at MS 131 in Chinatown!  Students from Urban Arts Partnership classes are teaching peers what they've learned this year through their arts projects.

In Class 717's ESL Science class with teacher Maria Pineda and teaching artist Laurie Krupp, students have been studying the different systems of the human body.  Their exhibition, entitled 'Every Body,' is located in the 1st floor Commons area of the school. The students' projects demonstrate the different parts of the systems and how they function together for the body to stay in balance.

Animals in the Rainforest

We have been learning about animals in the rainforests of the world.  We researched different rainforests and found animals that we are now drawing on murals in their natural environment.  We have learned all sorts of fun facts.

Did you know...

Some Gorillas live in the Congo.  98-99% of their DNA is exactly like humans!

Red-bellied Piranhas can be found in the Amazon River Basin.  They are known as the most ferocious of the freshwater fish.

Poison Dart Frogs can be found in tropical rainforests around the world.  Unlike most frogs, Poison Dart Frogs are diurnal rather than nocturnal.  This means that they are awake during the day when most frogs are sleeping!

Toucans can also be found in tropical rainforests.  In large species, their very colorful bills are half the size of their entire body!

The Anaconda is a large, non-venomous snake.  They are one of the largest snakes in the world!

Bengal tigers live in tropical rainforests in Asia.  They are solitary hunters.  There are only about 1,300-1,500 left in the wild in the Indian Subcontinent.

Here are some examples of our murals.  They are works in progress so we decided to take the pictures while we were working on them.  It's like you are in the studio with us!  We would love to hear what you think!

Science and Visual Arts-Who Are We?

Hello!  We are Ms. Takigayama's Science Class.  In our class this year, we are working with Eliza from Urban Arts.  For our first project, we are learning about different tropical rainforests throughout the world, from Madagascar to the Amazon! We are researching and then drawing the plants and animals that one would find in each rainforest.  Before we get to that though, we thought that we should tell you a little about ourselves.
