Life Stories

The Life Stories Youth Ensemble was founded in 2006 by Urban Arts and The New Group, to provide students with a laboratory to develop original works.  The program offers advanced acting and playwriting training to high school students from across the city.

Life Stories is proud to announce our 2010 Playwrights In Residence Program.  Five emerging NYC playwrights will be selected to take on the task of writing 5 original one act plays in collaboration with our Life Stories Students.

Heres how it works:

Each student will create a character based on someone they know.

They will create a detailed character outline and "I want" monologue to give to their writers.

Writers will each receive a pre-determined cast.

In groups students will share their characters and create original monologues inspired by their writers, who will provide both a secret and detailed memory for the actor's characters.

Over the course of 3 sessions, playwrights will bring in drafts to further refine and develop a script in collaboration with their actors.

5 weeks later, these 5 original plays will premier at the Acorn Theater on April 25th.

Stay tuned for updates!

Life Stories Students Teach Elementary School Workshop

On Feb 18th, Life Stories students put their skills to test by conducting a workshop for a group of 30 5th-7th grade students from the OASIS Vacation Camp program.  Bringing professionalism, poise, and maturity, the Life Stories Youth Ensemble planned and rehearsed an improvisation workshop, composed of their favorite improv games and acting exercises.  Each student selected a game that they wanted to teach and refined the best way to introduce the game. Best part about it, Life Stories Youth Ensemble was paid $500 for their workshop!  Who says acting doesn't pay ;-)  Stay tuned to see how the Ensemble chooses to spend their money.
