StoryStudio: Literacy Development for English Language Learners

Objective:
To develop English Language Learner students’ academic and social use of English through this model arts integrated education program.

Project Summary:

StoryStudio is a model arts integration program specifically targeted to English Language Learners (recent immigrant students) that provides visual and theater arts instruction while developing acquisition of, and fluency in, the English language.

New funding will allow Urban Arts Partnership to expand student support services and professional development of teachers for youth at MS 131 Dr. Sun Yat Sen in Manhattan’s Chinatown - 39% of whom are English Language Learners – as well as to two other Title I (high poverty) sites in Queens.

In NYC, recent immigrant youth are the fastest growing population of students, and one out of every four of the 150,000+ English Language Learner (ELL) students within the NYC public school system are also Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE), making the need for aggressive instructional supports even greater.

Your gift will help us reach more students and teachers through curriculum designed to advance the creative experience and the social and academic use of the English language for high poverty recent immigrant youth. Please help us to reach our goal by making a completely tax-deductible gift to the StoryStudio project.
