Our Applied Music School Extension Class is designated AFRICAN PERCUSSION RENAISSANCE. It is an exploration and study of African and African rooted Percussive Music Making using Harlem Renaissance as a backdrop. Students are receiving training in African and African inspired new world music traditions. This helps them to appreciate multicultural New York’s diverse population and variety of music; It also increase their artistic proficiency for original compositions, improvisation and prepares them for informal and formal performances.

In the attached pictures, students are showing the correct posture for playing African djembey and the dundun ensemble suites. The photos also show students practicing teaching,sharing and leadership skills as they work in groups to create pieces that reflect their own voices.
