Viacom volunteers donate their time at MS 131 in Chinatown.
Friday, May 6th was sunny and warm in New York City – perfect weather for the annual Viacommunity Day of volunteer projects! 20 employees from Viacom, representing MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and more, traveled to MS 131 in Chinatown to help Urban Arts Partnership refresh the school’s grounds.
Our volunteers completed two huge projects in one day, putting a fresh coat of paint on a long stretch of fence and re-painting the handball court to match a new community mural. Beautifying this space also reinforces its identity as a safe, community area – essential to the development and well-being of our students.
Viacom employees also visited a classroom to observe middle school English Language Learner students enrolled in our StoryStudio program. This model arts integration initiative provides visual and theater arts instruction while developing acquisition of, and fluency in, the English language. The students were presenting to the class and visitors original dialogue inspired by a still image and increasing their descriptor vocabularies. We were impressed by their creativity and bravery!
Thank you to our intrepid volunteers for their incredible work and huge hearts.
