Many students in our schools create projects from a selection of art forms as part of studio residencies during out-of-school time. Our teaching artists guide students through a themed program that may include My New York, My Message, or My World, focusing the study of an art form through an interdisciplinary project.

“Urban Arts Partnership’s after-school video program was one of the few experiences that I will cherish in my lifetime. They give people of any community or background a chance to accomplish goals and give a sense of pride and understanding. This is exactly what they did for me.” - Reyon, Student, MS 390

My New York

Students explore the mosaic of cultures and places that make New York City unique, while building artistic skills that help bring their own experiences with their city to life.

Sample: Hip Hop Renaissance Project – From 15th Century Europe to 1920s Harlem to the South Bronx in the 1970s, communities have continuously turned to new cultural movements to spark change during times of hopelessness. In this project, students will analyze the development of “culture” while exploring their own ideas, values, beliefs and traditions through poetry, music production and performance.

My Message

Students identify messages that surround them and become literate in the way meaning is created through the wide variety of symbols and structures embedded in them.

Sample: Digital Public Service Announcements – Through studying the techniques of design, color and text employed by both advertisers and visual artists, students will form their own aesthetic to convey an important personal or political issue to their target audience.

My World

Students address the theme of interconnectedness through exploration of local environments and the relationship with larger/global environments.

Sample: Documentary Filmmaking – By following the production chain of a single item across the globe, students will gain an awareness of the power and responsibility inherent within each consumer choice they make, and their ability to affect change through their decisions.
