Queens Veterans Home

On June 3rd Urban Arts students from two elementary schools organized an  event for the veterans at St. Alban’s Veteran’s Home in Queens, NY. Through Urban Arts Partnerships’ 21st Century after school program, students from PS 40 and PS 48 in Jamaica Queens presented theater, music, live performance, video, and dance. The students, from Urban Arts as well online slots as The Leadership Program, included kindergarten African dancers, third grader filmmakers, and fifth grade musicians.

The veterans, parents, teachers, and administrators gathered in the recreation room to watch over 40 performers in ten individual programs. The program was a wonderful opportunity for students to present their work to a larger community audience. Afterwards students and teaching artists met with each other as well as the veterans. It was a great end to our first year at both schools. As one veteran said “The kids brought great energy and really picked peoples” spirits up.” – Lenny, Veterans Home Tenant, First African-American Marine, WWII.
