The Renaissance Society @Kurt Hahn ELS

Bravery versus bravado. This is just one of the pillars of the Renaissance Society, an innovative club hosted at P.U.S.H. school Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School.

Led by TAs Jidenna Mobisson, Kasiem Walters and William Herasme, the program uses the Harlem Renaissance as a launch pad for an exploration into the rich history of noble men and women of African descent in America. Students are exposed to various art forms, including poetry, dance, music production, and visual art. Through a series of inquiry, Socratic discussion, and original art creation, students gain the understanding of what it means to be true Renaissance women and men.

The course began with one essential question: Is a Renaissance possible now in East Flatbush? According to students at Kurt Hahn, the answer is an emphatic yes.

Their first proof of this will be a showcase of original work created during the fall art residencies at the school’s monthly student-led Community Meeting on January 17th, 2014. Stay tuned!
