On behalf of Urban Arts and Chair Rosie Perez, we are thrilled to welcome Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Bling Ring) to the Urban Arts Partnership Artistic Board!

Sofia’s first project with the organization will be to mentor a group of young women producing an original web series through our Girls at Work initiative, sponsored by Glamour. She visited The Academy’s Media Lab last week to lead her first filmmaking seminar with producer/documentarian Erica Hill.

Through the Girls at Work program, female high school students enrolled in The Academy will create 4-6 short films that focus on honoring their own personal “Women of The Year.” Over the course of the year, the group will explore what qualities make a phenomenal woman, defining their own rubric for choosing honorees from their own lives. Each web video will include a profile of the featured woman; student reflections on the impact each woman has made on her community; and a student-created artistic tribute in dance, poetry, music, visual art, or drama.
The series will be archived online at www.urbanarts.org.
