UAP Rallys Around Community Schools
By Monica Casu, Site Coordinator, Pan American High School
On September 22, 2015, the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice organized a Community Schools Rally at City Hall. Parents, students, educators and community organizations advocated for the expansion of Community Schools across the five boroughs. Currently there are 130 new community schools reaching 50,000 students. Organizations present asked the Department of Education to move forward on the Community Schools Policy for current and future community schools to come.
Parents, educators and councilmen spoke about the many success stories community schools across the boroughs have. Participants marched, and chanted down the streets of City Hall. Spectators stopped and took photos of our group in front of City Hall.
Overall, it was a very positive rally for Community Schools. I was very happy to be a part of this event!
