DOE Grades prove that Urban Arts programs improve NYC public schools

Dear friends:

The New York City Department of Education just released its yearly progress reports for our public schools and I have fantastic news to share:

That’s right: Every Urban Arts Partnership Creating Minds school received the highest rating from the DOE. At Creating Minds schools, UAP works with school administrators and teachers to provide professional development and implement an arts-integrated curriculum into classrooms; expand artistic opportunities for students; and provide targeted support for school attendance staff. This comprehensive approach increases student engagement, which leads to improved attendance and mastery of core course content to keep students on track to graduate.

Since 2011, Metropolitan Diploma Plus High School, a transfer school in Brownsville, has been offering Fresh Prep to students who have previously failed the New York State Regents Exam. Fresh Prep’s innovative brand of Hip Hop-infused instruction engaged these struggling 12th-graders with an arts-based, fresh approach to learning. Not only did 80% of Fresh Prep students pass the test, they excelled, and the school’s progress report moved up from a 69 to an 87, an A.

These grades prove that our arts-based methods are changing the future for struggling schools and their students. And the deeper our involvement in the school, the greater the impact.

This holiday season, make your impact. Join me in empowering NYC youth to beat the odds by ensuring that they continue to have the schools and opportunities they deserve. Make a tax-deductible gift to Urban Arts Partnership today. Thank you in advance for your generosity and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.
