Rosie Perez speaks to prospective students at The Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academy Open House.

Please consider making a holiday gift to support The Academy.

Last Monday evening, Urban Arts Partnership welcomed over 80 New York City high school students to our offices for a special program. The Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academy Open House gave students, teachers, and counselors the chance to learn about the opportunities available to NYC youth through this new comprehensive out-of-school initiative.

The Academy‘s mission is to promote the intellectual, social and artistic development of underserved public school students by delivering cutting edge arts programs designed to develop student voice, strengthen academic performance and position graduates as agents of change in their communities. Students will take part in The Academy from 9th to 12th grade, spending out-of-school hours pursuing an art form (visual arts, poetry & spoken wordactingplaywritingmusic productionfilmmaking, or dance); participating in Fresh Prep courses and academic support groups; leading and instructing younger students; developing a portfolio; and more.

Monday’s event was hosted by Artistic Board Chair Rosie Perez, who shared her personal story of how the arts changed opened her up and changed her life. Young people and adults alike were inspired by her candidness and passion. She left the students with the advice to grab the opportunities that are in front of them, and to use every single resource available at Urban Arts.
Finally, Academy teaching artists broke students into groups according to their art form of interest. Young people were able to get to know their prospective TA, participate in a sample activity, and connect with like-minded peers.
Thanks to Rosie Perez, the Urban Arts staff and teaching artists, and especially prospective students and their parents/teachers/counselors for making this kick-off toThe Academy such a great success!
