Story Studio uses painting, collaging, poetry, and storytelling to develop the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills of students who are learning English. Teaching Artists partner with classroom teachers to integrate arts-based activities into ELA and ESL/ENL classrooms. Story Studio can be aligned to a variety of curricula to generate measurable academic outcomes while increasing student confidence and amplifying student voice. Story Studio takes the pressure off of students learning English so they can acquire a new language in an engaging and low-stakes way.
Students perform better on state exams: Independent evaluation results show that middle school students in Story Studio classes perform better on the state English Language Arts exam than their peers who did not participate in the program, with gains equivalent to 3 to 5 additional months of learning.
Students improve social-emotional learning skills: Teachers report students improving their communication skills, making new and creative connections to academic content, developing the confidence to express themselves, as well as excelling at a host of other measured SEL competencies (i.e. critical thinking, self-efficacy, creativity, and interpersonal skills).
